The renowned estate starting their solar journey

Dromoland Castle Hotel has just undertaken a rooftop and ground mounted solar project, with the support of MarVal Power, to start its journey into a greener future. The MarVal Power team partnered with the hotel to revolutionise their energy consumption by installing a cutting-edge solar photovoltaic (PV) system. The solar PV system across the estate in Co. Clare, will produce annual savings of up to €50,000 for the hotel.

This venture that the pair embarked on, is the start of Dromoland Castle’s greener future. The benefits of switching to solar power are endless and Dromoland Castle decided it was time to start reaping these rewards and chose MarVal Power as the ideal suitor to help them on this journey.

MarVal Power overseen the entire project and provided Dromoland Castle with a full turnkey solution. MarVal Power prepared and submitting the ESB NC5 application, SEAI Grant application, design, procurement, installation and commissioning.

The system boasts 608 high-efficiency Longi Solar panels, strategically placed across three roof arrays and one ground mount to maximise sunlight capture throughout the day. These panels will generate an impressive 203.14 MWh of clean energy annually.

The installation of any solar system will require some bespoke adaptability and the project at Dromoland Castle was no different. Like most hotels the complex roof structure of the estate meant the team had to think beyond a typical installation. Included in the setup were three advanced SMA inverters equipped with ShadeFix technology. Now, even the areas that don’t receive as much sunlight as the rest of the castle due to shading, still produce maximum energy efficiency. Showing again how the expert team at MarVal Power are leading the way in solar technology.

The staff at Dromoland had this to say on the renewable energy solution installed at the castle:

“Early in 2024 we decided here at Dromoland it was time to start our solar journey and make some savings…. MarVal seemed like the perfect choice to carry out the project due to similar projects they had completed on the east coast.”

“They helped allow for a seamless transition into solar energy and we can’t wait to start reaping the rewards.”

The project in numbers:

  • Peak Power: 261.44 kWp
  • Annual Energy Yield: 203.14 MWh
  • Self-Consumption Quota: 98.6%
  • Self-Sufficiency Quota: 20%
  • CO₂ Reduction (20 years): 1,364 t
  • Performance Ratio: 83.4%

“This installation will slash our electricity bills, by generating over 20% of the ground’s energy needs. Sustainability is something that we are looking to improve on here at Dromoland and this was the perfect start …. Over the next 20 years we will reduce our CO2 emissions by 1,364 tonnes and save nearly a million euro”

“The team at MarVal were extremely efficient and professional and we could not have asked for a better group to get our solar energy ball rolling.”

The aesthetics of a hotel as renowned as Dromoland, and maintaining this image, was at the forefront of the installation on the grounds. MarVal had to use their expertise, adaptability and personalised approach to every aspect of the project to meet the needs the Dromoland team required, and they succeeded.

Dromoland’s solar project is a testament to the growing role of renewable energy in the hospitality sector. This initiative not only benefits the castle’s bottom line but also sets a positive example for other businesses considering the switch to solar.

MarVal Power has enhanced the entire castle. Dromoland’s commitment to new methods of sustainability means they are leading the charge into a greener future for the hospitality industry.
